While a 6-day Rongai Route climb is possible, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a faster pace and might increase the risk of altitude-related issues. Adequate physical preparation, prior high-altitude trekking experience, and careful monitoring of your body’s response to altitude are crucial. Choosing a reputable trekking company and following their advice can greatly contribute to your safety and success on the climb.
As always, consider extending the trek to allow for more acclimatization time if you’re concerned about altitude sickness. Your health and safety should always be a priority.
Arrival in Tanzania usually in Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Spend the day resting, preparing, and attending a briefing with your trekking company.
Drive from Moshi to the Rongai Gate (around 1,950 meters or 6,398 feet) and then hike to Simba Camp (around 2,650 meters or 8,692 feet). The hike is relatively short and takes you through the rainforest zone.
Hike from Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp around 3,450 meters or 11,319 feet. This day’s hike is moderately steep and takes you into the moorland zone.
Hike from Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp (around 3,600 meters or 11,811 feet). This camp is off the main trail and provides excellent acclimatization opportunities.
Hike from Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (around 4,330 meters or 14,207 feet). You’ll cross the alpine desert zone and reach the base of Mawenzi Peak.
Start the summit attempt from Mawenzi Tarn Camp. Reach the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet). Descend to Horombo Hut (around 3,720 meters or 12,205 feet) for overnight.
Descend from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate (around 1,860 meters or 6,100 feet). Receive your summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
